Do you end your day with some nightly ritual? No? Boy, do I have the one for you. If you’ve ever heard of The Internationale, you’d know it’s a rousing anthem for the working class. But it also makes for a great lullaby. Almost every day before bed, I listen to the soothing tune of The Internationale (in the original French of course!) to help me sleep. The rhythm really helps me wind down, and the message is very powerful, something I’d like to hear before sleeping. Despite the paradox of it being some ‘energizing’ and ‘vigor-inducing’ song, it really does have a meditative quality. The rhythm is steady, almost hypnotic, and I’d really recommend it to almost everyone.

How did I even start this habit? Well, it wasn’t unusual for me to end my day with some songs on YouTube, however these songs weren’t usually so anthemic. I’d listen to older Slavic songs, modern stuff, historical stuff, etc., yet one day I remembered The Internationale. A beautiful song that inspired socialist movements for roughly 150 years by now. Ever since then, I continued to eagerly listen. Emotionally, the song is very heavy and grounded in international solidarity. It’s the melody, yes, but also the message! A mix of hope and other positive feelings make it a perfect song for nighttime.

In fact, I’d say it’s good for you. I’m no sleep doctor (I’ve never even met one), but repetition, like a consistent routine of listening to The Internationale, definitely aids in sleep and has probably improved my sleep quality. I usually get around 7 hours of sleep per night, and establishing routines such as this has led me to believe I have improved in the ways of slumber. It purges the bourgeois thoughts right out of me!

Music is powerful in the subconscious, and while I hope it’s not rotting my brain, it certainly reminds me where we stand. I even learned the original French lyrics and can pronounce the words almost fluently, like ‘C’est l’éruption de la fin’. Such lyrics are powerful! In fact, most of the song has really powerful lyrics. Check them out for yourself.

Anyway, The Internationale is the song of both peace and progress. I recommend you try falling asleep to this song seven (7) times a week, or at minimum one (1) night per week. Please keep in mind, this has not been approved by a medical professional. Side effects may include dreams of unionizing your workplace.
