Today, I heard that the PKK dissolved! I’d say I support(ed) the PKK, especially their abandonment of Marxism-Leninism in favor of libertarian socialism, and most importantly, their fight for Kurdish freedom. For almost forty years, the PKK fought Turkish soldiers, giving Kurds in Bakur rights and halting assimilation.
Reuters reported that more than 40,000 people died over the course of this conflict, and I’m glad that the war is over. Their imprisoned leader sent a message in February telling them to disband, stating that the armed struggle had outlived its initial purpose and that further progress in the struggle for Kurdish rights could be achieved through politics, which is exactly what I support.
I trust that the Kurdish people know what is best for themselves, especially now that they’ve gained international attention. The PKK had plenty of international support (from people, I mean, basically every country designated it as a terrorist organization), so much so that over three million signatures were sent to the European Commission to remove the PKK from their list of terrorist groups just over two years ago. Change is possible from the inside, and I hope we’ll see the Kurds accomplish more in the next four decades than they did in the previous four.
